The Biological Research Centre – the "Vasile Fati" Botanical Garden, of Salaj County is located in the north-east section of Jibou, on the second terrace of Somes River. Built during the years 1959-1968 after the project and the idea of the biology teacher Vasile Fati, the garden is today consideared to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. The project was modernized in the years 1978-1982.
The garden is set on the leisure park territory of the medieval castle in the area, which was Wesselényi family’s residence. The Botanical garden’s area is 24 ha and it is located at an altitude of 272m, with a relief displaying big bumps, but also, with flat surfaces.
The entire complex is organized by sectors, comprising different areas that are grouping the plants by scientific criteria, a complex of collecting greenhouses, of micro-production and Research, an aquarium, a zoo and a Japanese garden.
The Botanical Garden is also a multi-functional center of education, teaching, research and it is integrated in the Association of Botanical Gardens in Romania (A.G.B.R.). This association has developed out of "the need to achieve a more convincing involvement of botanical gardens in plant diversity conservation action at national and European level" (F. Micle)
